Orchid Spotlight: Gramatophylums

This Month’s Featured Orchid: Gramatophylums
I love Gramatophylums! We are approaching their spring blooming season and Gramatophylum orchids are about to put on a spectacular floral show. Grams are usually large plants that produce flower spikes anywhere from 3' to 8' long. These flower spikes will be covered with dozens of blooms that last many weeks to as long as two months. They thrive on St, Croix and will quickly grow to specimen size for you. In our botanical garden on St. Croix we have at least 4 different varieties of Gramatophylums: Gram. speciousum (the world's largest orchid), Gram. Broga Tiger (flower pictured above) and 2 varieties of Gram. scriptum. The 'normal/regular' scriptum has a greenish-yellow flower with sort of rust brown markings that resemble tiger stripes. There is also a Citrine variety with green flowers. For those of you with limited space, there is a dwarf variety of Gram. scriptum that will do very well run a 6" pot.

These orchids are native to Southeast Asia, New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. They are know for their large size and impressive long-lasting floral displays.

Care Tips for Gramatophylums:
-
Culture Notes: These are epiphytic orchids that do well in our warm tropical environment. They have long strap-like leaves. Many varieties have large semi-flattened pseudobulbs with short vertical roots at their base in addition to their primary roots that grow in media. They produce long flower spikes that can sometimes bear more than one hundred large flowers with interesting intricate markings.
-
Light: Bright: indirect sunlight is key. Grow in the light you give your Catasetums and Vandas. Many of my orchid friends grow their Grams in the direct sun.
-
Watering: Give plenty of water and fertilizer during their growth phase which is spring through fall and then decrease watering and feeding for the winter months.
-
I grow my Grams mounted or in wire baskets with a mixture of large bark and sphagnum moss. Mine do well in media that dries out quickly after my frequent waterings.

A Grammatophylum or two are must-haves for any orchid collection on St. Croix. These easy to grow, hard to kill orchids will reward you with many years of beautiful flowers whether in a pot or wire basket or at the base of your palm trees.

Quick Tip: Mount your Grams lower, rather than higher since the long flower spikes produce by the orchids may make the flowers difficult to admire if they are mounted too high in your trees.
