Orchid Spotlight: Cattleyas and their hybrids

IMG_4277.JPG

This Month’s Featured Orchid: Cattleya Hybrids
Cattleya species are native from Costa Rica through Argentina. They are warm-growing epiphytes typically found growing high up in the jungle canopy. They often produce large fragrant flowers in a variety of striking colors. Cattleyas are the original "corsage orchid" and back in the day, growers in New Jersey would ship hundreds of thousands of blooms to New York City and other metropolitan areas for Valentines and Mothers Days and Easter to be made into corsages to complete holiday outfits.

Cattle's are frequently used in hybridizing because of their showy flowers. They are commonly crossed with Brassavolas and Laelias. Cattleya species are often large-growing plants and recent hybridizing efforts have focused on producing compact and dwarf size plants.  Although these modern hybrids are smaller-size plants, they still can produce colorful large flowers and will often bloom multiple times per year.

Care Tips for Cattleyas and their Hybrids:

  • Light: Bright, indirect sunlight is key.  A Cattleya with dark green leaves will not bloom.  Give the orchid enough light to produce Granny Apple green colored leaves.  If your orchid's leaves are red-tinged, they are receiving too much sun.

  • Watering: Cattleyas like to dry out between watering so water them weekly with very pure water. Rule of thumb: If your Cattleya looks like it needs water, wait a day.  Growing your Cattleya in an unglazed clay pot will help pull water away from the roots and prevent fungus. Also, be sure to water your Cattleyas early in the day so they can dry out before event to help prevent fungus and rot.

Cattleyas and their hybrids are wonderfully suited to the climate on our beautiful island.  Standard Cattleyas will grow quickly into specimen size plants.  Cattleya species usually flower once a year while modern hybrids can flower multiple time per year.
